Infill is the material that goes between the turf fibers after the grass is laid. It does two jobs: it weighs the turf down so it stays flat and tight, and it holds the blades upright so they don't mat down under foot traffic. The right infill depends on how you use the space. A backyard lawn, a dog run, and a sports surface each call for a different choice. Here's what we use, and when.
Rounded silica sand is the standard infill for most residential lawns.
It's clean and adds the weight that keeps your turf flat and stable through years of foot traffic. For a backyard or landscape install, sand does the job.
For homes with dogs, we use Microguard-treated OptiFILL+, an antimicrobial acrylic-coated sand. It blocks the bacteria that turn pet urine into ammonia odor, so the surface stays fresh between rinses. Paired with proper drainage, it's what keeps a dog yard from smelling like one.
Crumb rubber adds cushioning and shock absorption, which suits sports surfaces and high-impact areas more than standard lawns.
