Installing pet turf costs $7–12 per square foot and takes two to four days for most yards. A proper installation includes gravel base work, flow-through backing for drainage, and antimicrobial infill, so your yard stays clean and odor-free for 15+ years.
If your dog has destroyed your lawn with urine spots, mud, and worn-out patches, artificial turf fixes all of it. You’ll pay more upfront, but you’ll stop spending money on water, fertilizer, and repairs. Most homeowners break even within five to seven years.

Why Are Dog Owners Installing Pet Turf?
Natural grass and dogs don’t mix. Urine kills grass and creates brown spots. Digging tears up the yard.
Mud gets tracked into the house after every rainfall. In Texas, 100°F summers turn damaged lawns into dust. In Florida, heavy rainfall turns bare spots into mud pits.
Artificial turf handles all of it. Urine drains through instead of pooling. The surface can’t be killed or worn out by normal pet activity. Your yard stays consistent year-round.
We’ve installed artificial grass for dogs at thousands of homes across Texas and Florida. The dog owners who switch tell us they wish they’d done it sooner.
What Makes Pet Turf Different From Regular Artificial Grass?
Installing pet turf addresses the specific damage dogs cause, from urine to digging to heavy foot traffic.
Our pet turf includes a Microban antimicrobial coating on every fiber, reducing bacteria by 99% for the product’s life. Flow-through backing drains 30+ inches of liquid per hour, so urine moves through instead of sitting on the surface. No pooling means no odor buildup.
Standard turf with hole-punched backing drains much more slowly. Slower drainage lets urine sit long enough for bacteria to grow and for it to smell.
All our artificial turf products are PFAS-free, 100% lead-free, and non-toxic. Dogs can roll on it, chew on it, and play on it safely, with none of the fertilizers or pesticides natural lawns require.

How Do You Install Pet Turf?
Installing pet turf happens in five stages. Skipping or rushing any of them leads to problems down the road. Here’s our full artificial turf installation process:

- Planning: Measure your yard, identify obstacles like sprinkler heads and tree roots, and map out drainage slopes. Pet areas need extra drainage planning to prevent urine from pooling in low spots.
- Soil removal: We dig out three to four inches of existing soil, clear roots and debris, and compact the ground.
- Base installation: We spread and compact a four-inch gravel base. A thin base causes settling, puddles, and uneven surfaces within a year or two. We don’t skip this step.
- Turf installation: The turf goes down wrinkle-free over the base. We trim edges precisely, secure them with anchor pins every six inches, and make seams invisible.
- Infill application: The right infill keeps blades upright, adds weight to prevent shifting, and controls odor. For pet areas, we recommend Envirofill, an antimicrobial infill that handles odor control better than standard silica sand.
Most residential pet turf installation projects take two to four days, and you’ll have a fully usable yard the same week. We handle the full scope of work, including tearing out the old lawn.

How Do You Clean and Maintain Pet Turf?
Maintaining artificial grass takes a fraction of the effort natural grass demands. Your neighbors spend 100 to 150 hours a year on their lawns. You’ll spend five to 10 hours total.
Pick up solid waste daily. Rinse with a hose once or twice a week, focusing on spots your dog uses most. Our flow-through backing drains urine in seconds.
For a deeper clean, use an enzyme cleaner made for synthetic turf; it breaks down organic waste a hose rinse can’t reach. Check out our full guide on cleaning turf for pets.
Brush high-traffic areas monthly to keep blades upright. Top up infill in heavy-use spots every two to three years to maintain drainage and odor control.
How Much Does Installing Pet Turf Cost?
Artificial turf for pets runs $7–12 per square foot installed. That includes tear-out, haul-off, gravel base, turf, infill, and minor irrigation work. For a 1,000-square-foot yard, expect $8,500 to $12,000 total.
Natural grass costs less upfront, but annual maintenance runs $1,500 to $3,000. Artificial grass maintenance costs $100 to $200 per year. The math works in your favor within five to seven years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Installing Pet Turf
Does pet turf smell when dogs use it every day?
It doesn’t when you’ve got proper drainage and antimicrobial protection. Our flow-through backing drains at 30+ inches per hour, so urine passes through instead of pooling. Microban coating reduces bacteria by 99%.
A weekly hose rinse keeps it fresh.
How long does pet turf last with heavy dog use?
Pet turf lasts 12–18 years with proper drainage and regular cleaning. Our residential installations come with a 15-year warranty.
Can dogs dig through artificial turf?
Artificial turf resists normal digging. The backing and infill create a surface dogs can scratch at without tearing through, so you won’t be patching your yard every few months.
Is artificial grass safe for puppies?
Our turf is 100% lead-free, PFAS-free, and non-toxic. Puppies can chew on it without health risks. It’s safer than natural grass treated with fertilizers and pesticides.
What do you put under artificial grass for dogs?
A four-inch compacted gravel base is the standard for pet areas. This gives you a stable, level surface with proper drainage. Two inches or less leads to settling and puddles within a year.
Can I install pet turf myself?
We don’t recommend it. Proper installation requires precise grading, a compacted four-inch gravel base, and professional seaming. We’ve fixed plenty of DIY jobs that failed within a year.
How hot does pet turf get in Texas and Florida summers?
Synthetic grass reaches 120–140°F on a 100°F day in direct sun. Light-colored turf with proper infill stays 20–40°F cooler. A quick rinse with a hose drops the surface temperature by 30 to 40°F instantly.
Do you install pet turf in both Texas and Florida?
We install across Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Tampa, and Sarasota. We’ve done 10,000+ installations and understand both climates.
